HINDUSTAN AERONAUTICS LIMITED, NASHIK DIVISION![]()
HAL is a vertically integrated Aviation Complex and employs a versatile workforce of over 40,000 trained and experienced personnel operating from seven locations in five Indian States. Together, they combine expertise, skills, competence and resources to produce a select class of aviation products. Nashik Division of MiG Complex (comprising Nashik and Koraput Divisions) is one vital constituent of the vast HAL facilities. Nashik Division, established in 1964 for the manufacture of MiG 21 series aircraft is located at Ojhar, 24 kilometers from Nashik in the State of Maharashtra and is spread over a built-up area of 2,30,000 square metres. It employs 7600 personnel in various disciplines of engineering and technology. It is, perhaps, the only and the largest single facility of its kind in the world, today, outside the Russian Federation, involved in the repair/overhaul and manufacture of MiG series aircraft, under one roof. Over 1500 MiGs have been manufactured and overhauled by this Division, as on date, for the front-line crack fighter squadrons of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Currently, alongwith maintenance, spares-support and overhaul of MiG 21 variants, Nashik Division manufactures the swing - wing MiG 27M aircraft for the IAF. Overhaul of MiG 27M aircraft has also commenced. Nashik Division's leadership as a front ranking aeronautical industry is, however, derived from the unparalleled skills of its engineers, technologists and employees and also from the vast experience gained by them in proving their ability to absorb and apply diverse technologies for the successive manufacture of MiG 21Fl (interceptor), MiG 21M (ground attack), MiG 21BIS (multi-role) variants and MiG 27M, since 1964. The massive infrastructure
at Nashik, today, includes the latest plant-machinery, sophisticated machining
facilities including CNC machining, computers, Design and Development Wing,
Indigenisation Cell and Well-equipped Quality Control Laboratories. All
together, these factors meticulously combine a high production efficiency
on the shop-floors with best quality standards of the final product. The
high degree of serviceability in the fighter squadrons of the Indian Air
Force only proves this point- and everyone at Nashik is proud of it.
Main areas of activities
MANUFACTURING FACILITIESManufacturing facilities include
REPAIR AND OVERHAULWith "in - house" spares and ratable manufacturing and overhaul capabilities at its command, the Overhaul Complex is truly full - fledged in all respects. Over 800 MiG 21FL , MiG 21M, MiG 21BIS and trainer versions have, so far, been overhauled by the 1000 strong workforce of this Complex.A continuous support extended to the MiG squadrons includes the overhaul of ratable in electrical, mechanical, electronic and instrumentation systems. The overhaul facilities and capabilities also encompass complex communication and weapon control systems, hydraulic and pneumatic accessories and major assemblies like undercarriages, ejection sets etc. FINAL ASSEMBLYAircraft, after structural repairs, goes through pre-designated stations with dedicated equipping and testing facilities for all systems. A triple stringent quality control checks ensure total reliability before releasing the aircraft for ground and flight tests. Modern ground testing facilities for extensive control testing and pre-flight checks at the Flight Hangar ensure high degree of quality and reliability as well as the flight safety of the final product.FLIGHT TESTINGFlight testing is carried out by experimental test pilots who are graduates from the Indian Test Pilots School. Data analysis is done by a qualified team of engineers using state-of-the-art equipment. The large test flying airspace permits uninhibited envelope testing which includes supersonic flights at both low and high level. The airfield at Ojhar, owned by Nashik Division, comprises of a 3100 meter, 40 PCN, runway with BEFAB arrester barriers. Classified as Class ‘A’ it is equipped with surveillance and precision approach radar. A ground based navigation and ILS system termed RSBN and PRMG respectively, are also available, which are dedicated to Russian aircraft like MiG 21, MiG 23, MiG 27, MiG 29 etc.ROLE/GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENTNashik Division manufactures a wide range of Role/Ground Support Equipment which plays a major role in the operation and exploitation of civil and military aircraft. The design, development and manufacture of this equipment is backed by over 26 years of technological expertise, experience and precision skills to meet the stringent requirements of the aviation industry. This equipment conforms to the international standards and is available at the most competitive prices with assured product support service. The equipment are
COMPUTER SERVICESThe facilities include UNIVAC-1100 Mainframe, a mini computer and a number of 4AT6 , 3AT6 and 2AT6 micros providing software development platforms under OS1100, UNIX, MS-DOS, CODASYL, DBMS and RDBMS environment.Nashik \Division has developed high-profile software packages in the areas of Production Planning and Control, Material Management, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Distributed Numerical Control etc. PRODUCT TRAININGThe Division’s Product Training Centre equipped with modern aids, conducts system-wise/trade-wise training programmes for introduction/conversion to new technologies and updating of skills/knowledge for existing technologies. Training programmes include classroom as well as on-the-job training. The Division conducts tailor-made training programmes to meet the customer requirement on setting up of various facilities, transfer of technical know-how, learning and mastering of new equipment and technologies.QUALITY ASSURANCERight from the initial stages of manufacture and overhaul, thorough inspection coverage is provided at all essential points in the process of build up of aircraft. This is achieved through the deployment of over 500 qualified, dedicated and approved inspection staff. To assist in this process, the Division has a Central Laboratory which is equipped with modern non-destructive testing equipment as well as mechanical, physical and chemical testing facilities. A vast array of sophisticates test equipment is deployed throughout the factory to ensure that quality standards of the product are commensurate with the aircraft’s high performance. Quality control activities are fully backed by Metrology Section equipped with highly sophisticated precision equipment. Quality Circles Quality Circles on the shop-floors
with involvement of technicians at grassroots levels constitute yet another
significant feature of Division’s sustained efforts in pursuit of excellence
of the final product. A large number of technicians, as also the managerial
personnel, with their innovative skills and suggestions have, over the
